Officials from the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium gathered on Sept. 20 to celebrate the groundbreaking of Safari Africa - a $30.4 million development on 43 acres. The new exhibit is expected to open in May 2014 and will be designed to simulate an open African plain, with visitors looking through glass as animals roam across what looks to be a savannah.
Messer Construction Co. was selected as the construction manager, with engineering being handled by three firms: EMH&T, Jezerinac Geers & Associates and Prater Engineering Associates. St. Louis-based Peckham Guyton Albers & Viets Inc. will serve as the designer.
