Messer/TMG and Laughlin Millea Hillman architecture have created an award-winning template which future builders and designers will use for pediatric health care facilities. Specifically designed to address the physical and emotional needs of children, the award-winning, state-of-the-art, 71,000sf Kosair Children’s Medical Center – Brownsboro (KCMC) is the new standard for children’s health care facilities.
For example, KCMC is equipped with a four-foot-tall entrance door and windows at heights befitting a child, enabling kids to feel comfortable in the intimidating health care environment. In addition, there are two indoor playgrounds and one outdoor all with high tech video walls for patients and their siblings.
The building’s skin is made from Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF) – an environmentally-friendly material produced from recycled materials that repels moisture and is resistant to mold, dust and allergens which is ideal for a health care environment. Numerous other sustainable features have KCMC on track to achieve LEED® certification.
This project was awarded the Associated General Contractors’ (AGC) 2010 “Build Kentucky” award.
Construction Manager at Risk
Construction Management is a contractual agreement in which the construction manager (CM) is hired by the owner to coordinate the total construction of a project. The owner, designer /s and the construction manager are a team from planning through construction. The basic objective of the CM method is to integrate the project planning, design, construction and post-construction phases of the projects. This approach allows creativity in developing design to achieve the owner’s goals.
The CM is responsible for the performance of the job and holds the trade contracts in this arrangement. The CM also offers a Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) which guarantees the owner that the total cost of the project will not exceed a maximum amount.
