On Feb. 12, Senior Vice President Mark Gillming participated in a hearing on the "Challenges and Benefits of Employee-owned Small Businesses" before the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Small Business in Washington, D.C. He testified on behalf of Messer and as a member of the Employee-Owned S Corporations of America (ESCA) Board of Directors.

In his remarks, Gillming confirmed both the personal and greater economic benefit of the ESOP model, as well as discussed the unique culture of Messer driven by a shared interest in the success of the company. "Small decisions become big ones" when everyone is personally invested, he said. He also stated that the 1996 statute that created S corporation ESOPs "allows us to continue to build toward our retirement, all of us working together, and know that when we get up every morning and go to work, we are building for the future—not only for us, but for our families."

ESCA also submitted a statement for the record highlighting the Promotion and Expansion of Private Employee Ownership Act (H.R. 2258).
