Beyond the Field and Court: Building the Next Generation of Collegiate Athletic Performance Spaces

September 9, 2025

Winning collegiate athletics programs are built on more than talent and hard work. They thrive on innovation—integrating cutting-edge technology and secure data infrastructure into specialized training/performance environments to give athletes (and institutions) every possible advantage.

At Messer Construction Co., we’ve seen firsthand how these advancements are transforming athletic facilities into high-performance ecosystems. Recent projects, like the University of Cincinnati’s Sheakley Indoor Practice Facility (IPF) and Athlete Performance Center, highlight the shift. Success is now measured by improved recovery rates as much as points scored, with the success of modern athletic spaces designed to support athletes physically, mentally, and strategically.

Smarter Systems, Stronger Athletes

Within the IPF, Messer coordinated a fully integrated, dedicated IT infrastructure. This allows coaches to capture and analyze film and performance metrics instantly. Protecting intellectual property while enabling immediate review gives teams the ability to adjust strategies on the spot and maintain a competitive edge.

Facilities are also embracing specialized training equipment once reserved for professional teams. An underwater treadmill, for example, provides low-impact rehabilitation and conditioning, helping athletes stay fit while reducing stress on joints. These types of investments extend player careers, shorten recovery times, and keep athletes performing at their peak.

Lessons from Lexington and Louisville
Messer’s work at the University of Kentucky’s Craft Center and Rupp Arena showcases the complexity of building sports venues that meet evolving demands. In short, the foundation for success is built long before the first whistle blows.

  • Craft Center: This project required careful coordination next to Memorial Coliseum while maintaining game-day operations, resulting in dedicated practice courts, hydrotherapy, and training and weight rooms for UK men’s and women’s basketball.
  • Rupp Arena: Messer modernized Rupp Arena and Central Bank Center with a $256 million renovation while keeping the venue fully operational for games, concerts, and conventions. Innovative solutions like building a new Central Utility Plant in nine months and installing temporary loading docks minimized disruptions and kept events running smoothly. The result is an 839,000-sf transformation with upgraded seating, expanded event space, and modern amenities that reinforce Rupp’s role as a cultural and economic anchor for Lexington.

Meanwhile in Louisville, Messer delivered the L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium North Endzone Expansion for the University of Louisville and Lynn Family Stadium for Louisville City FC— projects that demonstrate the importance of planning early for audio, video, seating, and field details often handled by owners or specialty vendors.

Best Practices That Deliver
Sports and entertainment venues present unique challenges: public visibility, massive scale, complex logistics, and multiple stakeholders. Messer’s best practices include:

  • Early planning: Nailing down details like competition surfaces, seating, suites, concessions, and AV/IT during preconstruction sets projects up for success.
  • Stakeholder engagement: Site tours, virtual updates, and transparent communication keep donors, recruits, and fans invested throughout construction.
  • Vendor coordination: Specialty providers—from scoreboards to hydrotherapy pools—require focused coordination with building services and infrastructure for seamless installation & integration.
  • Proactive procurement: Early involvement of subcontractors and vendors ensures critical materials and equipment stay on schedule and within budget.

As Senior General Superintendent Jake Marsac puts it:
“Clear communication and early decisions keep projects running smoothly.”

Always Improving
Every project provides lessons that make the next one stronger. Insights from the Craft Center, Rupp Arena, Nashville FC’s GEODIS Park, and UC’s IPF inform our approach today. By focusing on collaboration, cost transparency, and innovation, Messer ensures every sports venue project is a win—for owners, athletes, and fans alike.
